Plot[]
Reunited, Glenn and Maggie plan their next steps while another faces devastation. Carl and Michonne spend time together. Lee continues his search for Clementine.
Synopsis[]
Nestled in a secluded area by the road, Carl and Michonne tend to a fire in the late afternoon. Carl hopes that his dad will return with something better than just a can of beans. Michonne agrees, and says that she’s been starving all day. After a beat of silence, Carl quietly wonders aloud if Judith would have liked beans. Carl remembers a vague memory from when he was a baby about eating two whole plates of baked beans when he was old enough to eat solid food. Michonne smiles, but then frowns when she sees his melancholy expression, and how he says that Judith never got the chance to grow up and become her own person.
Finally, Rick walks back in, carrying a dead possum. Michonne suddenly gives it a look of disgust, but Rick says it's this or just beans. She doesn’t say anything else, and just silently pulls out her katana to slice into it. Rick puts it down for her and she gets to work, while he then goes to Carl and places a hand on his shoulder and asks about him. Carl just says that he’s feeling tired and hungry and wants to stop running. Rick promises that they’ll eat real soon. Carl asks about the other group, since they haven’t seen them in a day or so. He asks what they’ll do if they catch up. Michonne gets a dark expression on her face and just says that she would rather they didn’t. Rick agrees with her. This leaves Carl a little bit confused at the visceral reactions.
Elsewhere, deep in the woods, Joe’s group sits at a makeshift camp they set up. Lou is on the ground, clutching his amputated forearm while groaning in pain. The stump is red and puffy and clearly getting infected. Tony shows back up and reports to Joe that he lost their trail for now. Joe isn’t worried, claiming that everyone leaves “bread crumbs” no matter how careful. Len, annoyed at Lou’s incessant cries and pleas for the pain to stop, says that they should just put him out of his misery. He pulls out a gun but Harley blocks him, telling him to back off. Billy kills a walker coming up to their perimeter and snaps at them to be quiet or more will come.
“It won’t matter, this dipshit’s yellin’ will just draw more anyway!” Len insists. “If we want any shot at catching those pricks, we gotta take care of him. Now.” Lou looks up at Joe and begs him not to. Joe sighs heavily, then looks at Len with an almost apathetic look. “Just make it quick. One shot, then catch up. We’re moving out.” Lou cries out in despair as Joe’s group, minus Len, starts walking off. Lou tries to scoot away as Len aims at him. Len mocks his cries and tells him he should’ve been less clumsy, before promptly shooting him directly in the head. The shot echoes around, and birds fly away as it happens.
On the railroad crossing, Glenn rests his head on Maggie’s shoulder and caresses her hand. She seems a little stiff, but she leans back in and gives him another kiss. She tells him how happy she is to have found him. Maggie asks if they found Terminus yet, and Tara points out that they got pretty close but came back to try and get to her. Tyreese asks her if she found any sign of others on her own, but she regrettably did not. Tyreese suggests that everyone might be at Terminus already. “I’m sure the others are there waiting for us. Beth, Sasha, Carol… all of them.” Glenn and Tara suddenly exchange a look. Maggie looks confused, but then Glenn gives her a small glance and she understands.
He stands up and approaches Tyreese solemnly. Tyreese is confused, but Glenn puts his hand on his shoulder. “Tyreese… Tara and I, we got caught under some rubble at the prison and didn’t get out for a day or so. When we did… we found Carol. She was–” he pauses as Tyreese’s face begins to fall, “she didn’t make it, man. I’m sorry.” Tyreese backs up and shakes his head, muttering the word “no” over and over again. Maggie reacts with sadness and tries to comfort him, but he holds out a hand. He looks as if he wants to explode, but then he calms down and says that he needs to be alone, before walking away. Maggie tries to go after him, but Glenn stops her, telling her to let him have some privacy.
On the rooftop of a series of buildings in a small downtown area, Lee is walking across. His eyes are looking tired, as if he hasn’t been taking care of himself. He surveys the street below, with several walkers milling about. “Where are you, Clem…” he mutters to himself, almost feeling hopeless. He stares at the radio in his hand, silently pleading for her voice to come through the other end, but it doesn’t. He stops to rest, catching his breath, and tries to think about where he could look next. He’d already searched the neighborhood they had been in before and the surrounding town. What was he missing? He thinks back to the last time the man’s voice came over the radio. Suddenly, something he said makes him stand up immediately, and start jogging for a way down. He knows where to look now.
At the edge of the forest, Rick splits off from Michonne and Carl, telling them to meet back up by the road a little later. He warns them to be safe as the two of them walk into the trees, ready to hunt for any game they can find. After a bit of walking, Michonne starts telling him how he has to quiet his footsteps so as to not scare away any animals. Carl isn’t sure what she means by that, but then witnesses Michonne demonstrate by walking lightly through the forest. She asks if Rick has shown him how to properly hunt yet, and he shakes his head. She smiles a bit and says that they’ll learn.
Several minutes later, they’re perched behind a large tree. Carl has his gun out and scans the forest for what feels like the hundredth time. Michonne is sitting quietly and breathing rhythmically with her eyes closed. When he complains, she shushes him and reminds him that loud noises scare prey. He questions what she’s doing, and she simply replies “Meditating.” and opens one eye before closing it again. Growing exasperated, he wants to give up, but she once again shushes him and points to a deer that’s crossing his path. It looks at him and takes in his silent form. After more silent encouragement, Carl takes the shot, which hits the deer right in the neck, dropping it instantly.
Carl grins triumphantly, and the two head to retrieve it, when suddenly a few walkers emerge. Michonne readies her katana and tells Carl to stay alert. Together, the two of them try to protect their kill, with Carl steadily shooting a few, while Michonne meanwhile slices walkers left and right, getting more aggressive about it. Unfortunately, several walkers kneel down and start ripping open the deer. Michonne starts killing them, too, as well as more that swarm the body. She keeps hacking them and hacking them, until Carl suddenly yanks on her arm, telling her to run as more keep coming. Finally, she turns and runs with Carl, heading to a safer location in the forest.
Also in the forest, several miles away, Tyreese swings his hammer into several walkers surrounding him. He lets out loud cries after killing each one. When he turns and swings his hammer again, his arm is grabbed and stopped by someone alive. It’s Glenn, with Tara and Maggie behind him. Tyreese jerks away and tells them all to leave him alone. They refuse as he turns and starts storming off. Glenn says Terminus is only a few hours walk away, but he doesn’t want to go. He stops and sinks to his knees. Tears fall from his eyes as he mentions Carol, and how he had really loved her. “If she’s gone, what are the chances Sasha’s even still alive? What if I’m chasing nothing?” he wonders aloud. Maggie approaches him and reminds him about how she had felt the same way yesterday, but then she found Glenn, which means things can turn around.
Glenn gets Tyreese to stand back up, and he says that he can mourn her for as long as he needs to, once they’re safe behind the walls of Terminus. Tara thinks about something her dad used to tell her, and she relays it to him about being angry over Carol’s death. “Anger makes you stupid, and stupid gets you killed.” She comforts him by telling him how if Carol were here, she would be fighting like hell to get to Terminus as well, and would want him to reunite with everyone. Tyreese is silent for a bit, before agreeing to continue on toward Terminus.
Back in the neighborhood he had been in before, Lee storms down the street with a sense of purpose. Coming around a corner, he spots just what he’s looking for; the house where he saw the strange figure watching him the day walkers swarmed the street. However, blocking his way is a large cluster of walkers littering the entire street, seemingly stretching for a mile down the road. Lee’s face looks exhausted and worn down, and from killing walkers, he’s gotten some walker blood on his shirt.
Filled with determination, he pulls out his knife, but also reaches down where there are large shards of broken glass next to a busted window and readies one in his left hand. He winces as he squeezes it hard, which cuts his palm a bit and makes blood run down the shard. Then, he starts storming toward the herd. He effortlessly takes down the first walker to notice him, which gets many more to take notice. Lee doesn’t stop, and continues to stab, slash, and beat down walker after walker, continuing to push his way through. He lets out heavy cries of rage the more he kills. All he wants to do is reach Clementine. He has to save her. Finally, he slices through the forehead of the last walker, and it falls to the ground, allowing Lee to finally be in front of the same house, shrouded under a large tree in the front yard. He slowly approaches the door, ready to face what’s inside.
Popping out of the forest, Michonne and Carl walk along the space between the road and the trees. After a moment of silence, Carl asks her what that was all about back there, seeing her look so angry and almost in a trance. She answers that she was just making sure that they got out of there alive, but he doesn’t quite buy that and says that he hadn’t seen her like that before, not even at the prison when the Governor attacked. Michonne sighs deeply, and is about to say something, when they round a corner where the road runs parallel to a single railroad line. She sees Rick standing ahead, and he waves them down.
Rick stands beside a large red boxcar on the railroad track, looking at something. He asks them if they found anything, but Carl sadly reports they lost the deer they found. Rick agrees he came up empty handed as well. Michonne and Carl then set their sights on what he was looking at already. It turns out to be a banner draped across the boxcar, advertising Terminus, with the map posted on the side as well. Michonne asks Rick if they should try for there. Rick seems skeptical, but Carl points out that the others would if they saw these signs. Rick can’t argue with that, so he motions for them to get moving, and begin heading in that direction.
The main gate of Terminus itself is hesitantly opened by Glenn. The four survivors slowly walk inside, their weapons lowered, however they keep them held tight with their guards up. Coming into the courtyard, they see two older women chatting and laughing to each other, one of them being Mary. A few other survivors are sitting at tables nearby enjoying cooked meals. The women look up and exchange a look, before the other woman walks up and shakes Maggie’s hand.
“Well, hello there, I’m Brenda St. John!” she says with a heavy southern accent. Just then, a young man walks up with a big smile on his face. He remarks that they’ve been getting a lot of newcomers lately. He continues to introduce himself as Gareth and speaks to Mary, asking if the food for dinner later is ready, which she confirms is being prepared. Brenda comments on the disheveled appearance of the survivors and how they need a good meal. Tara mentions that they were split up from the rest of their group, and Tyreese asks if they’ve taken in anyone named Sasha.
Gareth seems to stiffen, and Mary looks over at him, before smiling almost too wide. She tells him that a woman by that name did show up a couple of days ago. Just then, the radio on Gareth’s belt crackles. A man’s voice comes through, telling him that he saw four survivors approaching the gates and to be ready. Gareth picks up the radio. “Don’t worry, Chuck, they’re here. Just keep on the lookout, they say they’re part of a bigger group, so they might be showing up as well.” He then looks to the group and says that they can take them to the rest of their friends who had already shown up. He turns to the woman standing behind him. “Cynthia, please show them?” She nods and waves for them to follow. As they walk, Glenn notices the gun tucked into her waistband underneath her sweater.
Everything is quiet as Lee walks into the house. It looks empty and everything is pristine, as if the apocalypse hadn’t touched the house. Lee walks through the living room and looks to his left, where he sees a long hallway with a few doors. At the end, there’s a door closed with a thick rope tied around the handle. He hears soft banging coming from behind the door, and is about to take the rope off, when he hears a gun cock behind him. Lee spins around to see a man staring directly at him, pointing the gun at him. “That’s not your room,” he says.
